YES is a London-based art studio with a unique approach toward typography and image making. These hand-printed serigraphs are from a series of original artwork created for the now defunct British band The Stands. If you’re interested, they’re still available for purchase through the Web site.

Parrot by Starck

If you love music, then you know how important creating the ultimate listening experience can be. And most likely, you’re willing to go to the ends of the earth to achieve the ultimate sound. If you fall into this category (I believe the experts call these people audiophiles) then you’ll love the Zikmu speakers from Parrot by Philippe Starck. Not only are they gorgeous specimens of listening innovation, they’re also wireless! No more hideous speaker wires laying about the floorboards of your apartment! Now because of the built-in Bluetooth and Wi-Fi technologies, music can be transmitted through the ether and emitted through the speaker (excuse the rhyme). Plus, the Zikmus also feature NXT technology, which makes room placement a no-brainer — sound automatically adapts to the acoustics of the room. And as is becoming requisite, they also feature an iPod/iPhone docking station. Of course, as expected, these beauties aren’t cheap. At $1600 they might set you back a bit, but then again, music’s never sounded so good.

chad vangaalen.

chad vangaalenIf you’re a fan of Sufjan Stevens, chances are you’ll enjoy Chad VanGaalaen. The Calgary-based musician got his start in music as a busker and went on to be signed by Flemish Eye and Sub Pop. You should definitely listen to “Whisper Tree” — my favorite from his most recent record — in which he’s accompanied by a plucky banjo, and at times his voice melodically quivers just like the prodigal Stevens. Plus there’s something about the honest sounding key signature that strikes a sad chord in your heart.

The Girlfriend Experience.gfExperiencePoster

Because Stephen Soderbergh’s latest film stars adult film star Sasha Gray as a high-end call girl, it might lead you to believe it’s all about sex. And he’s aware of this. Which is why The Girlfriend Experience is decidely not about sex. In fact it’s a statement about an unraveling money-obesessed America. Shot over the course of 16 days in October 2008, the film takes place just eight days before the 2008 Presidential election. You’ll find that the dialogue is rather flat, which was most likely Soderbergh’s intention, although the film was also largely unscripted, so one can’t be totally certain. Despite this, he creates a unique viewing experience in that we are able to reexperience an America of our not-so-distant past.

You can catch it in theatres and on-demand.

music balloon by yuen’to.

April 21, 2009 · 2 Comments

These wicked cute microphone-looking objects are called music balloons. They’re external sound devices intended for plug in to iPods and cell phones. As far as I can tell, music balloons are not yet available in the US, but you can order one from Japan at the Web site Yuen’to.

The cover for the new Yeah Yeah Yeahs album makes me want to buy a carton of eggs and then stand in my apartment and make a mess of them. It just looks so satisfying!

stereo cabinet-shaped music box.

February 11, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Repost from 2Modern Design Talk.

Stereomusicbox

While searching for something fascinating to share, I discovered this music box. I was captivated by the attention to detail the craftsman paid to this little stereo cabinet music box — which plays “On the Street Where You Live” from My Fair Lady. It has book shelves, complete with book facades! And, just as you think it couldn’t possibly get any cooler, the top of the cabinet opens to reveal a set of mini records. So sweet!

the disciples by james mollison.

james mollisonDisciples of Rod Stewart.

This week a photo exhibit by James Mollison opens at the gallery at Colette. The photographer dutifully followed “disciples” of pop bands around on tour for three years (2004-2007) and photographed 8-10 followers at every show he attended (including Jennifer Lopez, Snoop Dogg, Madonna, Rod Stewart, Artic Monkeys, Dolly Parton, and so on and so forth). Mollison then combined the shots into one panoramic photo of each musician’s devoted fans. There are 58 panoramic shots in all and more than 500 individual photos. The results are seamless and extremely funny and will be on display at Colette until January 24, 2009.
