SANE grew up in the Washington Heights neighborhood of NYC, a veritable pressure cooker of population. Surrounded by the subway graffiti of the day, he and his brother SMITH found inspiration that would take them to the heights of graffiti in New York. Sadly, it wouldn’t be long before SANE, an individual with troubles unknown to anyone, would tragically take his own life. To this day, SMITH continues to keep his brother’s name alive and well, in the streets of New York, and on freight cars rolling all over the US.
I would like to share some examples of SANE’s work, all commemorating Independence Day, and this great nation:

Painted in honor of the many men and women who for years lived in virtual secrecy beneath the city of New York.

I don’t have kids. In fact, I probably never will, it’s just not something that interests me. But, I do know lots of people who do have little ones, and if you fall into that category, might I suggest a lovely Father’s Day gift for you?

Now admittedly, this is a shameless family plug: my cousin’s wife, Teri Weidner, is a children’s book illustrator, and her newest project, “Say Daddy!,” is out just in time for Father’s Day. Although, if you want to get the real scoop on the book, check out what my cousin, Chris Dahlen, had to say about it. He does justice to her craft much better than I.

Did you know that in Switzerland spaghetti is harvested from a tree?

In 1957, while watching the BBC program Panorama, 8 million viewers witnessed the Swiss spaghetti harvest in awe, causing hundreds of people to phone the BBC and ask how they too could grow spaghetti on a tree.
And while it was April Fools’ day in 1950s England, the more plausible excuse for the public’s interest probably had more to do with cultural norms — spaghetti came in a tin can with tomato sauce — than utter gullibility. Nonetheless, the reporter instructed the viewing public to “place a sprig of spaghetti in a tin of tomato sauce and hope for the best.”
Happy April 1st.
